GEMS
GEMS Girls Clubs (Girls Everywhere Meeting the Savior) is a group for girls in grades 4th - 8th that meets every other Monday evening, 6:45 - 8:30PM, September through March at New Era Christian Reformed Church. During these meetings we do a variety of things including Bible study, life discussions, games, service projects, and crafts. We average 12-16 girls at our meetings and we currently have volunteer 3 counselors.
The theme verse for GEMS Girls Clubs is Micah 6:8 - "And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." We try to apply this verse to every area of the girls' lives through discussion and interaction with one another.
Each year we also have a second verse that is the theme for that year. For our 2009-2010 season the theme is "Prayer, No Worries" and the verse is "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Philippians 4:6. Our hopes for this year are to rely fully on God without worrying as we spend more time in prayer for our world, our neighbors, our family, and ourselves.
The GEMS program has been in existence in the Christian Reformed Church for 50 years when it began as Calvinettes. In 1995 it was renamed GEMS, and today there are thousands of GEMS groups in churches across the US and Canada and several in Zambia, Africa that are supported through the GEMS groups in our country. God is good and faithful, and girls all over the world are building their relationship with Him and others through GEMS.
